ParkerVision, Inc. (PRKR) Patent Portfolio Crushes Competition Yet Again in Independent Ranking by The Patent Board
ParkerVision, the leading developer of RF solutions for cutting-edge wireless applications across current and next-gen mobile networks, which has amassed a sizeable IP portfolio spanning an incredible 211 domestic and international patents, reported today on the recently published analysis from The Patent Board (March18, Wall Street Journal) showing that PRKR once again holds leadership positions in three broad wireless categories as defined by overall value and technology impact.
Taking home first place in three of six criteria in this tri-annual ranking, PRKR is showing clear and continued sector dominance, as the criterion devised by The Patent Board is widely held by top industry experts to objectively quantify the impact of a given wireless/telecom patent portfolio. The company seized first place in “Industry Impact,” “Research Intensity,” and “Science Strength,” placing PRKR neck-and-neck alongside industry giants like Cisco, Motorola, and Samsung.
The company locked-down some 23 domestic and international patents in 2012 alone and has grabbed at least the number one slot in two or more of The Patent Board’s criteria for the last two years in a row. That’s six reports in a row now and, having captured the Science Strength category again on merit of the Board’s cumulative five-year analysis, it looks certain that PRKR’s IP position is yet again in the telecom sector pole position.
Chairman and CEO of PRKR, Jeffrey Parker, praised the continual innovation and development of practical, yet ingenious solutions in the wireless communications space which have been relentlessly pioneered by the company. Pointing to the company’s tech portfolio as a prime mover in the evolution of the mobile device space, especially from a usage standpoint, Parker indicated that this strength would continue to be an asset for PRKR in attracting both investors and new customers.
Managing Partner for 3LP Advisors and former VP of IP Strategy for IBM, Kevin Rivette, called PRKR’s IP portfolio one of the strongest he’s ever reviewed in his three plus decades in the industry. High praise coming from this top independent IP advisory firm and the best practices research, tools, and metrics developed by The Patent Board (and used here in their Patent Scorecard) confirm this perspective roundly when applied to PRKR. The Patent Board was established back in 1968 as a comprehensive patent analytics/sector research institute and has grown to become a firmly accepted authority by and of today’s most rigorous standards.
The Patent Scorecard used as a diagnostic assessment draws on patent activity over a given interval and benefits a great deal from the Board’s creation of over 50 leading indicators that track global patent activity. The capacity of the Board to track innovation, technology, and science strengths as related to patent impact cannot be underestimated in terms of its significance and the Science Strength indicator in particular is a great measure of how much play/traction given patents are having in trade and industry publications. While it is difficult to quantify things like Industry Impact (broader industry penetration by patents) and Research Intensity (degree to which patents build on the core science), the Board is hailed widely as a rigorous benchmarking platform and PRKR’s obtaining of the top slot in these categories says a lot to market analysts.
The Patent Board has made solid determinations in PRKR’s favor for six sessions in a row here and this is quite a feat for the company, who is a fraction of the size of sector competitors, yet routinely demonstrates an ability to punch well above its own weight with ease.
