Chanticleer Holdings, Inc. (HOTR) Branches Out in Australia from Sydney Base

When Chanticleer Holdings recently announced plans to open its first Hooters restaurant in northeastern Australia, it was based upon a comfort level the company had established with its initial site in Sydney, together with some clear and positive demographics. Chanticleer, part owner of Hooters of America (HOA), is independently developing Hooters restaurants in Australia in a joint venture with the current franchisee, as well as in Europe, South Africa, and Brazil. The latest Australian store is scheduled to open later this year in the city of Townsville, in Queensland, and will have a capacity of 216 seats. The city is considered prime for a Hooters location, with a solid population of young military men and mineworkers, together with strong growth prospects.

The iconic American chain was well known in the area well before the newest restaurant was proposed, with appearances by the Hooters girls for special events, and strong sales of Hooters T-shirts and other merchandise. The company has also announced plans to open an additional restaurant in Queensland, at Surfers Paradise, roughly halfway down the long Australian coast from Townsville to Sydney. It’s all part of the company’s roll-out plan, with an ongoing pipeline of planned international openings.

Australia is the world’s 13th largest national economy in terms GDP, driven largely by mining, agriculture, and a strong service sector, and it’s a major exporter of minerals and agricultural products. The country’s per-capital GDP and individual wealth is one of the highest anywhere, with a standard of living and culture that lends itself well to the casual dining atmosphere of Hooters. Tourism, including domestic tourism, is also an important industry, and supports the Hooters concept as well.
