Visit almost any part of the United States in late spring or early summer and you’ll face the chance of thunderstorms, including lightening, one of nature’s most spectacular weather-related displays. And so it was on a breezy Philadelphia afternoon in June of 1752 when Ben Franklin conducted one of the most famous experiments in scientific history. Franklin, together with the help of his son, flew a kite in the face of an approaching thunderstorm. A silk string ran from the high flying kite down to an iron key at the other end, with a small wire running from the key to a Leyden jar, an old version of a capacitor for collecting electrical charge. The idea was to prove that lightening, of which little was known at the time, was a form of electrical discharge. The hope was that any electricity would run down the silk string and pass through the metal key to be captured in the Leyden jar. As the storm approached, Franklin, who used a dry ribbon to hold the string and was therefore somewhat insulated, reached out to touch the key. A spark instantly jumped to Franklin’s finger, dramatically confirming the presence of electricity.
Franklin’s experiment was one of the early contributions to the emerging science of meteorology, providing a clue about the workings of weather and the atmosphere. But its demonstration that the atmosphere is a massive generator of electricity was used primarily to help protect people, with little consideration given to its potential as a source of useful energy. Franklin himself went on to invent the lightening rod to protect buildings and people from lightening’s destructive power.
