Chanticleer Holdings, Inc. (HOTR) Sees Major Expansion in South Africa

Chanticleer Holdings is a part owner of Hooters of America (HOA), the private operator and franchisor of over 412 Hooters restaurants in 28 countries. In 2011, Chanticleer and a group of private equity investors, which included H.I.G. Capital, KarpReilly, LLC, and Kelly Hall, president of Texas Wings Inc., the largest Hooters franchisee in the United States, acquired Hooters of America (HOA), a privately held company.

In addition, Chanticleer has rights to develop and operate Hooters restaurants in South Africa, Australia, Hungary, and parts of Brazil. Today, Chanticleer is focused on expanding the Hooters casual dining restaurant internationally, with restaurants in Australia and Hungary, as well as several operating restaurants in South Africa.

Chanticleer has the exclusive franchise rights to develop and operate Hooters restaurants in South Africa, and currently has a majority interest in 3 South African locations. The company intends to fund and own 100% of all additionally opened restaurants. South Africa has a population of nearly 50 million, with over 1.5 million in the capital city of Pretoria. Given a GDP of over $1/2 trillion, the country is Africa’s largest single economy. There is believed to be a market for at least 20 Hooters restaurants in South Africa, and a management company has already been formed to operate and manage all South African restaurants.
