Chanticleer Holdings, Inc. (HOTR) Grows International Market for Hooters

Few American industries have been as successful exporting as the restaurant industry, both fast food and casual dining. Major American restaurant chains, stepping on each other’s toes in the progressively saturated domestic market, are expanding into virtually every corner of the globe, resulting in hundreds of thousands of restaurants around the world.

The biggest players, Subway, McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Burger King, each have over 10,000 restaurants scattered around the globe, with the top two having over 30,000 restaurants each. Get a Subway sandwich in Zambia, or a McDonald’s hamburger in Moldova, or a Starbucks in Vietnam. The international stage is where the new money is, and such chains are now counting their overseas revenue as a major source of their annual income.

Today, Chanticleer Holdings is in the process of exporting another iconic American restaurant, Hooters. In 2011, Chanticleer and a group of noteworthy private equity investors acquired Hooters of America (HOA). Today, HOA is an operator and the franchisor of over 412 Hooters restaurants in 28 countries. In addition to its participation in HOA, Chanticleer is focused on expanding the Hooters casual dining restaurant brand in international markets. The company currently has rights to develop and operate Hooters restaurants in South Africa and has joint ventured with the current franchisee in Australia. The company also has franchise rights to develop Hungary and parts of Brazil while evaluating several additional opportunities internationally.
