MRI Interventions, creator of innovative platforms designed to enable minimally invasive surgical procedures in the heart and brain, today announced the first use of the company’s ClearPoint® system in an MRI-guided brain biopsy.
The system provides physicians with guidance for the placement and operation of surgical instruments used during neurological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedures. Simply put, when a physician uses the ClearPoint system, he/she aims the system at the neurological target of choice, and watches via MRI as the surgical instrument is advanced to the target.
ClearPoint is applicable for a range of procedures, including biopsies and catheter and electrode insertions, and is designed to work in collaboration with a hospital’s existing MRI suite.
The procedure was performed at MD Anderson in Houston, Texas, where neurosurgeon Dr. Ashwin Viswanathan and Dr. Sujit Prabhu utilized the integrated system of reusable components, disposable components, and intuitive, menu-driven software.
“The system worked well,” Dr. Prabhu stated in the press release. “The clear advantage is confirming the position of the needle tip prior to a biopsy and also identifying a safe trajectory to the lesion.”
