Ambient Corp. (AMBT): Reinventing How Utilities View and Control Data

Ambient, a leader in providing flexible and scalable smart grid communications platforms and technologies, has announced the release of the latest version of its network management system, AmbientNMS. This system is a purpose-built suite of integrated software applications for real-time fault, performance analysis, and reporting of characteristics of the medium- and low-voltage grid infrastructure.

Featuring new tools for interpreting, arranging, and sharing data, this latest version of AmbientNMS allows the utility to create preselected users or groups, with the ability to create an experience that is custom-tailored to that individual’s role, tasks, and priorities. These tools and features include auto-discover devices without user input/intervention; enhanced customizable lists and maps that can be viewed at various levels like state, city, and street level down to a single device’s information; capability of maps to be organized geographically or with electrical substation and circuit topology imposed on them; ability to retrieve and present real-time data such as energy use; ability to create reoccurring reports from regularly collected data; ability to control and share desired data-based metrics and users; configurable events and alarms based on user-defined thresholds for discerning the urgent and important information from the large quantity of available data; enriched charting and export functions for subsequent further analysis; and forward events like outage notifications to user-defined third party applications.

Having a smart grid network management system is vital to the successful implementation of smart grid initiatives. AmbientNMS is designed to support multiple levels of scaling, and the latest release evidences Ambient’s commitment to continually enhancing its products with additional functionality and features. AmbientNMS presently manages more than 100,000 nodes.

AmbientNMS’ main function is providing an extensible system for managing the communications network between grid devices and the existing back-office systems. The NMS is able to monitor and manage tasks, run discovery and status checks, query devices, and store and relay information and instructions between the NMS and the Ambient Smart Grid Nodes. The system distributes software upgrades to the nodes and manages other downstream devices conforming to the existing standards.

Additionally, the Ambient Smart Grid Platform facilitates multiple applications in parallel, including multi-service smart metering, outage detection and restoration management, power quality monitoring, distribution automation (for legacy and new) infrastructure assets, and others. AmbientNMS also automates the collection and reporting of data from hosted applications, integrating both Ambient’s own and third parties’ into other utility operational systems.

Ambient is engaged in designing, developing, and selling the Ambient Smart Grid communications platform, with products and services including communications nodes; AmbientNMS, a network management system; integrated applications; and maintenance and consulting services to help utilities save on operational costs. Ambient uses open, standards-based technologies and in-depth industry experience to provide utilities with solutions for their smart grid initiatives.
