Entropic Communications has carved out a sizeable market space for itself providing some of the top silicon and software solutions available for enabling connected home entertainment, terraforming the vast HDTV broadcast and streaming landscape into a seamless, secure, and easy to navigate place via next-gen set-top box SoC (system on a chip) solutions that allow Pay-TV service providers the ideal venue. The company recently announced further steps to secure its territory, being the first company ever to deliver true a MoCA 2.0® production silicon/software solution (Multimedia over Coax), with the production shipment of their MoCA 2.0, whose exceptional performance was debuted at The Cable Show in Boston (May 21-23).
Home entertainment requires simple, easy to use devices, and in an age of such enormous connected digital possibilities, the growing demand for solutions like the one ENTR is offering has become staggering. The proliferation of HDTV display devices has necessitated a major shift by providers and now, with the release of ENTR’s high-performance MoCA 2.0 solution, a super fast connectivity backbone for HD streaming video/media now exists in the coax space.
It is hard to really appreciate the full impact of this development if you aren’t a Pay-TV service operator, as the mission of distributing broadband bandwidth around the home and pumping IP video around via client/gateway architectures is rather complicated; however, Entropic’s MoCA 2.0 solution should be seen as a kind of silver bullet solution for such operators, as the sophisticated hardware provides the perfect framework to do all of this and with improved results. Whether we are talking throughput (which is the cream of the crop here), reliability, security, critical power management capabilities, or simply blanket interoperability with older generation one MoCA standards, the ENTR MoCA 2.0 platform hands in house-spanning HD video/media streaming excellence.
This production run has been fully tested against a rigorous benchmark of MoCA certification, following the certification test plan impeccably and achieving total MoCA 2.0 performance specs. Needless to say the folks at ENTR are extremely pleased with their achievement and they have reason to be, the end market however is more concerned with getting their hands on this impressive hardware:
• Total solution, whether we’re talking analog, MAC, PHY, or RF transceiver/front-end
• MAC throughput rates of 400 Mbps over 16 nodes (500 in two-node Turbo mode)
• 40nm semiconductor wafer process manufacturing provides robust operating capacity
• Low power mode and wake-on-MoCA nails energy conservation targets
• Complete backwards compatibility/interoperability with MoCA 1.0 and 1.1
• Better than 1e-6 packet loss/error rates and floor-scraping latency of 3.5ms
A smoking little silicon data pistol really and the thing can deliver to 16 nodes with better performance characteristics overall than anything out there.
VP of Marketing and Connectivity Products for ENTR, Al Servati, hailed the company’s MoCA 2.0 solution as being an extremely mature product which benefits greatly from the company’s first-to-market status (earned for constant innovation and ability to execute by delivering fully realized products to market). Servati underscored how this product is not only well timed, as Pay-TV operators migrate en masse to IP delivery in the home, but gets huge air off the springboard of ENTR’s market position, resulting in “significant market momentum and design-win traction” for this silicon marvel.
This production release of the full silicon/software solution should make some serious waves in the Pay-TV operator area, especially as more and more entities rush to implement next-gen media delivery architectures ahead of their competition. Truly, such a device makes possible a whole new service menu for end users and early adoption by operators will give them a real advantage in the shootout for subscriber business. So we basically have a cost-optimized MoCA 2.0 design (from F-connector to the host interface) here with amazing performance vectors, whose production silicon, software, and reference platforms are all now available for marrying to existing devices.
