Real Goods Solar, Inc. (RSOL) Reaches Milestone in Megawatts Installed

Real Goods Solar is a nationwide leader of turnkey solar energy solutions. The company began with one of the very first photovoltaic panels sold in the United States in 1978 and has now installed more than 14,500 solar power systems.

The company reported today that it installed more than 25 megawatts of solar power systems in 2012 for residential, commercial, and utility customers. In addition, Real Goods Solar achieved another major milestone, having surpassed cumulative installations of more than 100 megawatts. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), that is enough electricity to power roughly 16,900 homes.

That amount of solar power generated has a large beneficial effect on the environment. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 100 megawatts of solar power offsets more than 270 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions annually, which is equivalent to removing appropriately 25,000 vehicles from the nation’s highways.

Real Goods Solar believes the solar industry in the U.S. in still in its infancy, despite the dramatic rise in the adoption of solar power in recent years. The national photovoltaic market of installed capacity is expected to reach about 4 gigawatts this year, and then it is expected to double to nearly 8 gigawatts by 2016, according to the U.S. Solar Market Insight report issued by the SEIA and GTM Research. If that comes to pass, solar will be one of the fastest growing industries in the country.
