Today, SunPower announced that it is introducing its SunPower Solar Science Academy program to over 140 students from six K-12 school districts in California and Arizona. SunPower is also working with the districts to provide on-site SunPower solar power systems that generate clean, renewable solar power for their facilities and significant savings on energy costs.
“California schools are expected to achieve up to $1.5 billion in savings on their electricity bills over the next 30 years as a result of on-site solar power systems. The SunPower Solar Science Academy helps further leverage on-campus installations by bringing the technology into classrooms,” said SunPower’s Managing Director, Bill Kelly. “It is really rewarding for SunPower, which developed our leading solar technology here in California, to have that technology inspire kids towards excellence in their education.”
The weeklong program offers a solar-focused curriculum with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The students receive a mix of lectures and field trips combined with problem-solving discussions and practical applications of knowledge.
SunPower developed the Solar Science Academy curriculum in collaboration with district teachers under guidance from the Contra Costa Economic Partnership (CCEP), a nonprofit association of business, education and public sector leaders. Twenty-four teachers have contributed to the academies by creating lesson plans, leading academy sessions, and participating in solar training courses.
Randy Wallace, director at Tulare County’s Office of Education, remarked, “For 20 years I’ve worked on business-sponsored projects that connect hands-on experience to the classroom. The SunPower Solar Science Academy is by far the most organized and engaging project I’ve seen. I’m amazed at the knowledge staff and students are gaining as a result of the program.”
Mount Diablo, San Ramon Valley, West Contra Costa, Porterville Unified School Districts, and Oxnard Union High School District are hosting SunPower Solar Science Academies for students this summer; the Scottsdale Unified School District in Arizona will launch the program in the fall.
