Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST) Secures Order for Five C65 Microturbines to Fortune 100 Oil Conglomerate in Thailand

Capstone Turbine, the top clean-tech manufacturing firm which specializes in low-emission microturbines® (some 6,500 shipped worldwide with millions of logged runtime hours), was pleased to report yet further expansion into the oil and gas sector today, with the sale of five of the company’s mid-tier C65 (65 kW) microturbine systems to PTT Public Company Ltd., a Thailand-based Fortune 100 oil conglomerate.

This particular application of the company’s technology showcases the true beauty of the CPST hardware, which is known for its robustness, ability to run off just about any fuel, stand alone modularity, and extreme reliability, as the microturbines are destined to provide the main power source at an isolated/remote off-grid natural gas pipeline hub and nearby village. Running off the already available natural gas, the C65′s will supply the onshore transmission station that handles output from two offshore gas fields (as well as a third, the Zawtika field, by 2013) 124 miles out into the Andaman Sea.

The entire setup will provide some 120 kW of power just for the villagers as well and features Capstone’s Advanced Power Server to maximize architecture throughput. The overall power system also features a gas chromatograph for monitoring the composition of gas delivered through the transmission system’s pipelines. A tidy package of easy to operate, long-life energy hardware that will drastically reshape PTT’s operational profile for the area, the Capstone system goes a long ways towards helping PPT shore up Thailand’s energy security.

The deal was landed by CPST’s new Thailand distributor, Aqua Nishihara Corp. Ltd., and should see commissioning of the new hardware by the start of next year, bringing rock-solid energy delivery to the mission critical onshore/offshore pipeline system, now seen as being extremely vital to the future of Thailand’s overall strategic energy infrastructure.

Exec. VP of Sales and Marketing for CPST, Jim Crouse, underscored how important this pipeline system is for Thailand’s move to secure greater energy independence for itself, citing the country’s massive reliance on imports of oil and gas as a driving force behind adoption of newer policies by the Thai government aimed at both targeting indigenous sources and reducing emissions. Thailand is one of the first countries in Asia to jump on the green energy initiative bandwagon and the C65 is the ideal choice for not only surpassing environmental responsibility expectations, but also for ensuring the long-term energy needs of the village/pipeline facility.

Elements of the deal certainly not lost on Pongsapon Klinsong, Business Development Manager for the company’s Thai distributor, Aqua Nishihara. Klinsong emphasized how replacing the unreliable reciprocating engines with a C65-based architecture would not only create a stable energy solution for the village/facility, but do so in a manner which represents an optimized environmental impact and which takes advantage of the already available natural gas. Implementation of the new system is anticipated as improving overall consistency of gas flow throughout the system as well, something which will please PPT’s extensive regional customer base. The best part is that the C65′s will simply run off the gas already in the pipeline system, meaning PPT has a self-contained solution that will last.

Capstone is an ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004, and UL-Certified manufacturer and offers microturbines in 30 kW and 200 kW configuration as well, all of which share the same robust engineering and modular, run on any fuel design. An EPA Combined Heat and Power Partnership member, Capstone is seriously committed to transforming domestic energy infrastructure, while helping to reduce pollutants/emissions.
