Midwest Energy Emissions
Corp. (ME2C) provides customer-centric mercury capture solutions based on their
patented SEA™ technology, using a combination of materials tailored and
formulated specifically to customers’ coal-fired units. The SEATM technology is
an effective and economically sound solution to achieving mercury emissions
capture rates of over 90% in coal-fired power plants, and is guaranteed to
maintain compliance with the highly restrictive new EPA requirements on Mercury
smokestack emissions.
In April 2015, the final
component of the Clean Air Act of 1990, MATS (Mercury and Air Toxic Standard),
becomes effective. The MATS rule requires that all U.S. based coal and oil
fired electric power plants generating 25MW and higher to reduce mercury emissions
by approximately 90%. Currently, there are 31 U.S. states that have no removal
requirements and 17 U.S. states which employ some form of reduction rules,
while Canada currently requires 70% reductions. Three of the four major air
pollutants, (NOx, SOx and particulates) have already become regulated as part
of the Clean Air Act of 1990.
ME2C uses a proprietary
blend technology, called SEA™ (Sorbent Enhancing Additive), which was developed
at the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center.
SEA™ allows for greater than 90% mercury removal, meeting or surpassing the new
emissions regulations. It is the most economical technology of its kind,
typically less than BAC (Brominated Activated Carbon) or PAC (Powdered
Activated Carbon), and has the least balance-of-plant (BoP) disruptions.
The SEA™ product line is
specifically tailored for each application to match a customer’s fuel type and
boiler configuration for optimal results. This high-grade sorbent enhancement
additive, which is injected into the boiler in minimal amounts, works in tandem
with proprietary sorbents to insure maximum mercury capture with superior
economics compared to typical mercury removal techniques in use today. The
tailored approach has the added advantage of substantially reducing the impact
of mercury capture on the balance-of-plant systems and operations.
