Medical device company Kips
Bay Medical has announced that on Jan. 14, the first commercial implant of its
eSVS Mesh in Austria was performed at the Medical University of Vienna. The
implant was performed under the direction of Professor Dr. Gunther Laufer, and
the presiding surgeon in the case was Professor Dr. Sigrid Sandner. The eSVS
Mesh was deployed easily without complications.
“We are excited to have the
Medical University of Vienna join the growing number of international
institutions that recognize the potential value of eSVS technology for their
patients,” said Kips Bay Medical CEO Manny Villafana. “We look forward to
seeing CABG patients benefit from external vein support throughout Austria.”
Designed to be fitted like a
sleeve on the outside of saphenous vein grafts (SVGs), the eSVS Mesh
strengthens SVGs used in coronary artery bypass graft surgery. By strengthening
the SVG and preventing the damaging expansion of the vein graft, Kips Bay
Medical hopes to reduce or prevent the related injury, which can lead to SVG
failure and costly and complex re-interventions for patients undergoing CABG
surgery. In order to strengthen an SVG, the eSVS Mesh is created from nitinol
wire, which gives it considerable strength while enabling it to remain very flexible
and kink-resistant.
Kips Bay Medical is focused
on the manufacture and commercialization of the eSVS Mesh for use in coronary
artery bypass grafting surgery. The company acquired the eSVS Mesh technology
from Medtronic, Inc. in 2007. For more information, visit
