SunPower Corp. (SPWR) to Install Solar Systems at 11 Scottsdale Unified School District Schools

SunPower announced that it is installing 5.5 megawatts of high-efficiency SunPower solar systems at 11 schools in Arizona’s Scottsdale Unified School District. The highly anticipated installation will allow SUSD to reduce electricity costs at these schools by half, and the systems are expected to reduce the District’s overall electricity costs by $25 million over the next 25 years. These savings will enable the District to recover needed funds for academic programs and upgrades.

Taking advantage of underutilized space, SunPower is installing the systems on rooftops and solar shade structures in parking lots at the schools. The systems use SunPower’s high-efficiency solar panels, which are the most efficient panels on the market today. The systems are planned to be completed and operational before the end of September.

School districts nationwide are increasingly turning to solar power as an effective means of reducing operating costs and returning those savings to the classroom. SunPower is proud to be part of these efforts in delivering needed savings to America’s public schools. The Scottsdale project was facilitated, in part, by the APS Renewable Energy Incentive Program, which gives financial incentives to customers and helps them offset up to 40% of the costs of installing solar energy. SUSD’s systems were financed through Qualified School Construction Bonds, which allows the District to own the systems and reap the full benefit of the energy cost savings and APS incentive payments. Estimates provided by the EPA project that SUSD’s solar systems will eliminate 176,900 tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the next three decades, which is equal to removing 31,000 cars from Arizona’s highways.

SunPower Corp. is engaged in designing, manufacturing, and delivering the highest-efficiency, highest-reliability solar panels and systems available on the market today. For more than 25 years, residential, business, government and utility customers have relied on SunPower’s experience and guaranteed performance to provide maximum return on investment over the life of the solar system. SunPower is headquartered in San Jose, Calif., and has offices in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia.
