BSD Medical has sold several of its MicroThermX® Microwave Ablation systems and antennas to ADA Medikal in accordance with the companies’ exclusive distribution agreement signed in October 2012. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
The MicroThermX is a compact, mobile, proprietary system that includes a microwave generator, single-patient-use disposable antennas, and a thermistor-based temperature monitoring system. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously granted BSD Medical a 510(k) clearance to market the system for ablation of soft tissue; BSD Medical has also received CE Marking for the system, allowing marketing of the device in Europe.
ADA Medikal, a medical specialty distributor in Turkey, anticipates that it will need to order a “significant number of systems” to address the market for the MicroThermX in Turkey.
BSD Medical focuses on the development, manufacture, marketing, and service of systems to treat cancer and benign diseases using heat therapy delivered using focused radiofrequency (RF) and microwave energy. The company’s product lines include both hyperthermia and ablation treatment systems.
BSD Medical stock climbed following the news, with shares up nearly 4% by mid-day, trading at $1.63.
