Entropic Communications, Inc. (ENTR) Joins with Cortina Systems to Offer Advanced Broadband Router/Headless Gateway Reference Platform

Today, Entropic Communications and Cortina Systems announced a joint collaboration to accelerate the development of high performance customer premise equipment (CPE), including broadband routers and headless gateways, to enable advanced data and TV applications. The reference design is meant to address the growing CPE needs of service providers as they aim to enhance the user experience by offering higher broadband speeds, newer applications, and IP-based video.

The collaboration between the two companies leverages the pairing of Entropic’s first-to-market MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) 2.0 solution with Cortina’s CS7542 scalable digital home multiservice platform, which is the industry’s leading dual ARM Cortex-A9 processor architecture with multiple enterprise-class acceleration engines. The acceleration engines of the CS7542 substantially reduce CPU load for Wi-Fi 802.11ac/n performance, which frees up the Cortex-A9 processor to provide value-add services and a future-proofed solution for platform upgrades. Combined, this CPE platform creates a powerful system with best-of-breed performance and service to bring next-generation data and video services into and throughout the home.

Now, service providers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will have access to a reference design that enables them to quickly develop products with the highest performance levels and unmatched wire or wireless data throughput of 400 mbps to 1,000 mbps. The MoCA 2.0 solution from Entropic allows operators to offer the most reliable whole-home network backbone with backward interoperability to existing MoCA 1.x networks for multi-room DVR, streaming HD VoD content and extended Wi-Fi coverage throughout the home to support streaming video and data services for tablets and other mobile devices – all on the same coaxial cable.

Beginning January 2013, OEM and service provider customers will have access to the Entropic/Cortina broadband router and headless gateway reference design, which will be shown Jan. 8-11 at Entropic’s private meeting suite during CES 2013 at the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel.
