While much of the world has
been focused on oil and natural gas issues, including concerns regarding
associated pollution, much of the public has been unaware of one of the most

Coal is a well-known
producer of carbon emissions, but it is also a major producer of mercury, which
ultimately enters the food chain and becomes methylmercury, toxic to animals
and people. In the U.S. alone, roughly half of mercury emissions come from
power plants, a primary user of coal. And standard coal pollution technologies
simply do not address the serious problem of mercury pollution.
