Amyris, Inc. (AMRS) Surpasses Production Performance Milestone at Farnesene Plant in Brazil

Leading renewable chemicals and fuels company Amyris announced that in a 45-day period, its farnesene plant in Brazil has achieved a production run rate of 1 million liters.

The Brazilian farnesene plant is operating well and meeting the company’s technology, volumetric, and cost targets. All six fermentors are running as planned, and with ongoing production rates, Amyris is on track to achieve its year-end cost targets. It is expected that this year, the company’s plant at Brotas will produce more farnesene than the company has produced in its entire previous contract manufacturing operations combined. In all, Amyris has surpassed the 5 million liter production mark.

Amyris’ production facility, which is located near the Paraiso sugarcane mill in Brotas, Sao Paulo, Brazil, commenced commercial operations at the start of 2013, and all six fermentors were running by July to align with commercial volume needs. The company’s farnesene is a renewable hydrocarbon molecule that addresses growing demand in various applications, from diesel and jet fuel to high-performance materials.

Amyris is also growing the market with new and innovative products. Public transit buses in Brazil’s largest cities have traveled more than 15 million miles using a blend of renewable diesel, which has improved performance while reducing emissions. Amyris’ cosmetics business has also grown more than 80 percent year-on-year after the introduction of Neossance Squalane, its renewable, 100 percent plant-based version of squalane.

As announced earlier this week, Amyris has successfully secured a $35 million loan to provide bridge financing until the closing of the first tranche of its pending convertible note financing, which is expected in the coming weeks. The accomplishment of achieving production of 1 million liters of farnesene in a 45-day period has enabled the company to surpass the production performance milestones under its purchase agreement for financing. Amyris is now on track to meet its remaining milestones.

On Oct. 11, Amyris CEO John Melo spoke at the Advanced Biofuels Leadership Conference (ABLCNext) in San Francisco. A webcast replay of his presentation will be available in the “Investor Relations” section of the company’s Web site, www.investors.amyris.com, for approximately 60 calendar days.
