Cray, Inc. (CRAY) Recruits Industry Veteran to Lead Newly Formed Big Data Division

Today, Cray, a name practically synonymous with supercomputers, reported formation of a new division focusing specifically on the rapidly emerging and now multi-billion dollar “big data” market under product management veteran Arvind Parthasarathi, who has been named Senior VP/GM of the new YarcData division.

This is a smart move for Cray, which already has extensive grounding throughout global markets in supercomputing. The move to capture more of the big data market is a natural parallel evolution for Cray, whose Adaptive Supercomputing vision emphasizes the merging of innovative next-gen processing technologies in a unified architecture. This places Cray in an enviable position, from which the company can exploit its vast, existing competencies.

This is essentially a massive expansion for the company’s existing Knowledge Management practice. The new YarcData division will offer enterprises worldwide a cost-effective, differentiated big data solution honed for business applications. Drawing on employees from across the wide range of expertise available at Cray, YarcData will fuse marketing, sales, service, support, and key R&D personnel into one powerful operating unit dedicated to executing on the demands of enterprise customers who simply want the best there is to offer in big data analytics.

Before joining the Cray team, Parthasarathi led a global team as Senior VP/GM of the Master Data Management unit at Informatica Corp., serving business-focused data management solutions to a host of companies in various areas from life sciences to manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and government. Prior to this, he was VP of product management for Informatica’s Data Quality products, having risen to this role through dedicated effort as a senior director of data migration/integration. Parthasarathi will bring his immense set of proficiencies to bear as the Senior VP/GM of the new YarcData division, proficiencies cultivated prior to working at Informatica through extensive work in various roles at both Oracle and i2 Technologies.

President and CEO of Cray, Peter Ungaro, commented on the natural evolution from building massive supercomputer clusters capable of handling advanced scientific/engineering simulations, saying that the vast experience accrued handling some of the largest data-intensive environments in the world, truly stands behind the formation of YarcData. Ungaro indicated that this accrued expertise will be exploited powerfully by the application of a proven executive like Parthasarathi, thus capturing the explosion of data happening in enterprise business today and bringing Cray’s leading supercomputer technology to the forefront of big data solutions.

Parthasarathi agreed wholeheartedly, explaining that YarcData is really a nexus of the world’s most advanced computing platforms from Cray and emerging applications of that technology to challenging Big Data problems. While the Big Data market is still a newborn in many respects, its future is clear and awesome in terms of scope and range. This move by Cray fuses initiative with market presence in supercomputing, effectively bringing the company’s high performance computing platforms into an underserved global space that cries out for exactly the sort of seamless solutions Cray computing power can deliver.

YarcData may quickly become synonymous with premiere enterprise-class big data solutions and investors will be keeping a close eye on developments at Cray as things start to heat up. As Parthasarathi executes his objectives and enterprise businesses discover they can knock down these massive challenges via a veteran like Cray, notable results will transpire.
