Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST) Continues to Penetrate Pharmaceutical Market with 2MW Combined Heat and Power System in Northern California

Capstone Turbine, the premier clean technology manufacturer of microturbines energy systems worldwide, announced today that a pharmaceutical facility in Northern California has placed an order for two C1000 microturbines for use in a combined heat and power application.

The electrical and thermal demands of the pharmaceutical facility in Northern California will be accommodated by a partnership between Capstone Turbine Corporation’s west coast distributor, Regatta Solutions, and Energy Systems Development. The Capstone C1000 microturbines are capable of running in parallel with or separate from the electric utility grid, also known as dual mode. This capability guarantees secure and consistent power is delivered to the facility, even in the unfortunate occurrence of a grid outage, with no operational downtime. The dual mode feature gives the microturbines the ability to decrease utility costs during peak hours. To further boost the efficiency of the combined heat and power system to almost 90%, exhaust from the microturbines will be captured to supply steam and hot water to the entire facility.

“It was a pleasure working with the Energy Systems Development team on this opportunity. This project is another example of smart power application of Capstone’s product offering in delivering high energy availability and operationally efficient energy solutions to manufacturers,” said Steven Acevedo, President and CEO of Regatta Solutions.

Energy Systems Development, an engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance company based in Northern California, has been developing the site for three years, with a targeted commissioning in March 2014. A need evolved for an energy solution that could both provide secure power in a separate system from the grid as well as decrease operational costs during peak hours, and Energy Systems Development quickly selected Capstone microturbines.

According to Stu Chang, President and CEO of Energy Systems Development, “I think that our engineering team, with help from a real world integrator like Regatta Solutions, has created a blueprint for the future of cogeneration. No longer do you have to make a choice between stand alone or grid connect, you can have it all.” Capstone microturbines, in combination with Energy Systems Development’s cutting edge design of heat recovery units and rotary UPSs, create a truly mission critical power plant that enhances facility operations and cuts utility costs.
