UQM Technologies, Inc. (UQM) Doubles Down on PowerPhase HD Technology with Long-Term Supply Agreement

UQM Technologies, which has established a track record for delivering some of the best and most robust motors, generators, and power controllers for electric and hybrid applications, reported signing a new long-term supply agreement with leading alternative energy vehicle powertrain developer and long-time associate, EVI Vehicles International, as shipments of UQM’s PowerPhase HD®systems are now slated to go out as early as Q3.

This agreement is a major extension of an already close relationship between the two firms, who have constructed an impressive symbiosis, with this latest deal landing many more of the UQM systems in EVI’s all-electric vehicles, in this case for walk-in vans and medium-duty commercial trucks. PowerPhase HD was developed precisely for such applications around an extremely reliable and power-dense, brushless permanent-magnet motor which features a DSP-controlled (digital signal processor) inverter with sine wave drive that offers easily selectable torque and speed settings, in addition to the whole inverter setup being liquid cooled by a water/glycol subsystem.

The PowerPhase HD also comes with real-time event logging capability and CAN (controller area network) bus communications capability for optimum heuristics. These suckers are built to take a pounding too, and UQM has worked at great length directly with EVI and other manufacturers to ensure that the PowerPhase HD meets and even exceeds the exacting requirements of the market.

The PowerPhase HD system is perfect for the sort of GVW range we are talking about here (class 4 to 5) and, based on the UQM hardware output, these extremely scalable systems realized in the EVI vehicles can achieve travel envelopes as high as 90 miles on a single charge. Impressive performance statistics to say the least in this range of vehicles and it speaks volumes about how far the two companies have come in terms of the overall component architecture.

President and CEO of UQM, Eric R. Ridenour, boasted how the PowerPhase HD systems represent a real game changer for commercial vehicle manufacturers, who are able to take advantage of the robust capabilities of the systems and execute marvellously across a whole spectrum of battery electric and parallel hybrid vehicles.

CEO of EVI, Ricky Hanna, echoed his colleagues’ sentiments about the systems and pledged to continue to make full use of the mutually beneficial relationship between the two companies with future purchases, as the U.S. based UQM’s HD systems offer an electric powertrain solution for their medium-duty trucks and walk-in vans that is second to none.
