Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST) Filling 4.6MW of Orders for Northeast Natural Gas Producers

Capstone Turbine, the cleantech powerhouse and EPA Combined Heat and Power Partnership  member whose MicroTurbines® are helping to revolutionize the planet’s energy infrastructure, announced another juicy order today for their award-winning systems (over 6.5k shipped worldwide to date with millions of documented runtime hours). In this case, the company will provide 4.6MW of hardware to two of the biggest natural gas producers up in the nation’s northeast.

This is another big win for the company’s regional distributor in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast markets, E-Finity Distributed Generation, who locked down both of the orders. The orders include two of the company’s C1000 Power Packages, in addition to a C800 and three of the C600 packages. These extremely low-maintenance and durable, ultra-low emission packages, offer optimal electrical efficiency over a very wide operating range and are easy to monitor remotely as well, with the smaller packages also offering easily upgradeable frameworks (to 1MW) via field installation of additional 200kW power modules. We have a grid-parallel electrical production solution here in a design that allows the heat to be utilized as well, for standard water/space heating or even cooling via CCHP absorption chillers.

One of the customers picked up two of the C1000 units and two of the C600′s for the main power supply at a remote liquid stripping natural gas operation in the West Virginia panhandle and this implementation really showcases the footprint-centric design of CPST’s products. Managing Partner for the company’s distributor E-Finity, Jeff Beiter, pointed out how the extremely tight space availability at this remote site demanded just such a solution as CPST’s microturbines can provide, with the units able to be stacked up to fit the small footprint.

Both of the orders are slated for fall installation and the big selling points here are how rapidly this infrastructure can be implemented and then serve as a main, reliable power source for operations. The other customer is working over in Pennsylvania, where some typically rugged terrain and weather challenges make fuel transport impossible or simply too costly to consider as a viable solution. Again, this set of orders proves how rapidly the oil and gas industry is snapping up CPST product, wowed by the low-emission profile, low-maintenance requirements, small footprint, ease of implementation and easy over-watch, all elements that combine to make these onsite power generation solutions ideal for the entire sector.

The last thing producers need is yet another technical hassle to deal with and being able to drop in Capstone microturbine power packages is like an easy button for natural gas operators when it comes to redundant on-site power. This is power that can be trusted to provide stable output where access to a local utility just isn’t doable. The customer in Pennsylvania was especially enticed by the ultra-low emissions profile of CPST’s microturbines, as their operations are situated near State Game Land with a massive trout habitat and these microturbines not only help meet the state’s strict clean-air requirements, they also help to green up the company’s image overall.

Exec. VP of Sales for CPST, Jim Crouse, was pleased to point out that these two orders alone, according to the company’s sustainability calculator, represent the equivalent of taking over 3.2k U.S. passenger vehicles out of the emissions equation. A huge selling point for operators under increasing scrutiny over their environmental profile and one that doesn’t sacrifice a single iota of performance or cost-effectiveness over other solutions. In fact, the CPST products are a substantial upgrade in multiple respects.
