Vuzix Corp., a leading supplier of Video Eyewear and Smart Glasses in
the consumer, commercial and entertainment markets, recently announced a
partnership with HeadApp, an Italian software company focused on wearable
devices for the business market, to produce a new application for pilots using
Vuzix’s award-winning M100 Smart Glasses.
Glass4Flight is a developmental application for pilots that connects
WiFly, an integrated system that collects and communicates significant aircraft
and flight data in real time, with Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses to create a Virtual
Glass Cockpit and a whole new user experience for the pilot. The Glass4Flight
app is intended to display vital information including heading, aircraft speed,
aircraft altitude, flight time, flight level, route information, traffic
avoidance information, estimated time at next waypoint and other significant
flight data, creating a single source of information for pilots, available at a
quick glance. The application is designed for a hands-free experience, which
allows pilots to devote their attention to the flight instead of the cockpit
instruments.
Through the production of Glass4Flight with M100 Smart Glasses, Vuzix
is working to improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of private
flight, while simultaneously allowing pilots to more properly perform their
jobs. The application is currently in its final stages of testing, which is
taking place in Turin, Italy in collaboration with 15 planes from the local
Aero Club. The company is planning to make the application available for
purchase at the AERO2015 Expo in Friedrichshafen, Germany, on April 15, 2015.
“Creating a solution for the aviation industry isn’t an easy task, and
collecting and using the data is one of the biggest technological challenges
the industry faces,” according to Fabio Chinaglia, Founder and CEO of HeadApp.
“Once we got our hands on the M100, we knew this was going to be our primary
device. The M100 Smart Glasses offer an amazing user experience for the pilot,
much better than using any other kind of glasses, and we are excited about the
real work application.”
Paul Travers, President and CEO of Vuzix, echoed Chinaglia’s
excitement. “What we have seen so far has been quite eye opening,” said
Travers, “and the potential for our M100 with regard for the pilot program
gives us a lot of possibilities.”
The Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses are the world’s first commercially
available hands-free display and wearable computer designed for enterprise
users. Running on Android OS, the M100 contains a virtual display with an
integrated camera and a powerful processing engine that can be wirelessly
connected via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi directly to most standard networks,
smartphones and other compatible devices.
